Prof Jordi Monés

“Excellent experience working with Specipig’s team during the creation of the macular degeneration miniature pig model and other ophthalmic research studies.”

Jordi Monés

Ophthalmologist specialized in diseases of the macula, retina and vitreous humour

Prof. Jordi Monés is Director of the Macula Institute, Director of the Barcelona Macula Foundation, Adjunct Professor at the John A Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah Health in the United States, and Director of the Associated Macular Degeneration Disease Area in Age (AMD) at Perceive Biotherapeutics, California, United States.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree and doctorate cum laude in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona, Spain. He specialized in Ophthalmology at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, between 1986 and 1989. He completed his research fellowship in Retina at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard University in Boston, United States, in 1990 and 1991, and a clinical fellowship in Retina at the San José Hospital of the Instituto Tecnológico y d’Estudis Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico, in 1992.

Over the past 20 years, he has been the Principal Investigator in most international multicenter clinical trials for the treatment of any form of AMD, and has conducted phase I-IV clinical trials and investigator-driven clinical trials, and is currently participating in or designing several trials for exudative AMD, intermediate AMD, atrophic AMD, Stargardt disease and retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

In collaboration with Specipig, he has worked on different projects; in creating a large animal model, creating a miniature pig model with well-defined atrophy that mimics GA in humans and evaluating the safety of implantation of human RPE-derived iPSC cells.

According to Expertscape.com, which objectively ranks people and institutions based on their expertise in more than 29,000 biomedical topics, Dr. Jordi Monés has taken first place in atrophic AMD and exudative AMD in Spain from 2013 until now and the 26th and 25th place worldwide.
